Is it too late? - Part II

By Coach Bay

With the response I got to the last blog entry, I felt that it was appropriate to explore it further.

Several readers provided examples of people, who have decided to make the most out of their lives irrespective of whether they are in their 40s, 50s or 90s!!! Age is not an issue, they just make it happen - Thanks for all the great examples.

"It is never to late to be what you might have been!" - George Eliot

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Xiamen, where we did 4 leadership development workshops. Again part of the content was about personal change.

As adults, we have adopted many beliefs and some of them are limiting our further progress. We might have developed habits, which are working against us, and these habits can be hard to change. Frank Outlaw puts it very well in "It's all about Character":

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become your habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

In order to change, we work with people to make them more aware of their thoughts, actions and habits. We help them realize that they do have a choice.

Many of us live in environments, where we are comfortable. We are OK and many settle for OK rather than fully exploring our potential. We have our habits, and we settle for less than we could be. Life becomes predictable, and some people even stop growing and learning.

We know what we have but we do not know what we get if we decide to set a higher standard and explore our potential.

Based on the response from readers of this blog, it is obviously not too late!

So what does it take to build a new habit? Most research shows that it takes 21-30 days to build a new habit given that you exercise the new behavior daily. It is also recommended that you do not try to create more than 2 new habits at a time. Many people become to confident and try to do too much in one go.

It is also recommended to get support from people around you to reinforce the new behavior. Being accountable to another person increases the chances of building a new habit dramatically.

While I am writing this blog entry, I am playing the Live Aid DVD. Yes, it is the original Live Aid concert from 1985, which for me is the biggest concert ever. At the time, I was in high school, which was a fantastic period.

The concert was also described as "The day the music changed the world". The concert was indeed about changing the world, and even though it was more than 20 years ago, many of the artists are still out to make the Global Village a better place. That would include artists such as Sir Bob Geldorf, Madonna and Bono. It is not too late....

I decided to play Live Aid, when I came across the following story by Collin McCarty. Recalling my days in high school, and what worked for me at the time, it is definitely possible to enjoy the magic again!

Sometimes it is not about changing but simply tapping into our existing resources. Many of us tend to forget what we already have. We ignore our natural strengths and the simple stuff that works for us.

Enjoy the story:

Begin Again
by Collin McCarty

One of the best things we can do in our lives is this: begin again.

Begin to see yourself as you were when you were the happiest and strongest you've ever been.

Begin to remember what worked for you (and what worked against you), and try to capture the magic again.

Begin to remember how natural it was when you were a child - to live a lifetime each day.

Begin to forget the baggage you have carried with you for years:
the problems that don't matter anymore,
the tears that cried themselves away,
and the worries that are going to wash away
on the shore of tomorrow's new beginning.

Tomorrow tells us it will be here every new day of our lives; and if we will be wise, we will turn away from the problems of the past and give the future - and ourselves - a chance to become the best of friends.

Sometimes all it takes is a wish in the heart to let yourself...

Begin Again

What is your magic? It is never too late….

Keep Inspiring!
